Acknowledgments
This vocabulary is based upon Sogdian material covering the period from the 1st century (A.D.) up to the 11th century. I have tried to exploit manuscript or printed sources, as well as the works of the pioneers in Sogdian studies. I must confess that, after a long period of laying aside my own researches, I have not yet completed the vocabulary. However, the enthusiasm of some scholars and students in Samarkand and Dušanbē has led me to publish the book before having put an end to it.
